What trends and tropes do you guys think will become the "next big things" in genre fiction?

I have no idea. Everything's been done to death, and mixing different tropes together isn't exactly original. I assume originality comes via the
author's unique way of thinking and imagining.

More vampire romance. More zombies. And werewolves who get pedicures.
And garden gnomes who go crazy and kill everyone.

I think halfway decent grammar, editors who edit, and more attention to proofreading will be the next big thing in genre fiction.*

KentGowran wrote: **laughs** I would settle for authors and editors proofreading enough to realize that names like jeff and jeremy can easily be mixed up. And then, when they find it, fixing it. Nothing drives me crazier than that. It throws the whole thing off for me. Even though I know who the author is talking about, it's such a glaring mistake that if it happens more than once in a book, I pretty much won't read the author again. I'm starting to think that everything I read is basically the same story...over and over again. Even on the most exalted throne in the world, we are still only seated on our own butt

Nearly every story can be boiled down to "somebody wants something, and something else gets in the way".

Has anyone else read through the big intro piece in the most recent Mammoth Book of Best New Horror? There are entire pages taken up by paranormal
romance and other such series-based titles. It is somewhat unsettling that horror and dark fantasy are falling into the same "trap" that
mystery/crime writers face: if it ain't a series (in other words, a franchise), good luck!
